From ancient times human beings think about existential issues as for example the sense of life and its unavoidable end.
During every age, literary man, philosophers, painters have given their contribution although according different points of view and different cultures. To summarize their thought is too difficult. Philosophy is a good tool to offer reassurance and comfort during the last moments of earthly life for those persons who are going to leave it and for those persons who are very near to them.
Even in the classical Philosophy of Plato, and before him his master Socrates, the issues concerning death are faced and they consider it as a new life of the soul, a new vital cycle if is accepted the immortality of the soul and the possibility of reincarnation.
Eraclito speaks about the possibility of a impersonal immortality, like a real dissolution of man in the universe life. To the biblical conception that describes death like a punishment for the original sin, has been added, during the Christianity, the idea of death like a moment of separation between body and soul and the beginning of the eternal life.
The most of the conceptions alternate the fear of the unknown and the belief of the eternal life. Life and death represent natural matter that need to be lived. According to the nature point of view death exists only under the appearance of a passage. Death is the anteroom of a new life. Life and death belong to a continuous transformation process.
So is very significant that a very pessimist philosopher like Shopenauer in his work “Die Welt” compares death with sunset because it represents the rise of the sun in another place.
